After winning the Regional seven times, including the past five consecutive Regionals, the Lady Panthers have finally won the Class A Northern Semi State. Pioneer traveled to Frankfort on Saturday afternoon to take on the Covington Trojans. The Lady Trojans had the size advantage over the Panthers but the Panthers quickness and tough defense and serving proved to be too much for Covington. Pioneer won the match in 4 sets with scores of 25-14, 22-25, 25-12 and 25-18.
The Panthers brought in a great balanced game plan for the match and everyone who got in the game made contributions. Defense was a huge key to the Panthers success and leading the defense was Libero Haley Gleitz, who had 30 digs in the match. Mackenzie Campbell followed with 16 digs, Mackenzie Walker had 15, Mikenna Landis had 13, Alexis Robinson picked up 9 digs and Cami Stewart finished things off with 9 digs. Pioneer also stepped up their blocking game and had 8 blocks as a team to help slow the high powered offense of Covington. Mikenna Landis had 5 blocks with Madison Blickenstaff and Mackenzie Campbell each having 4 and Olivia Brooke had a block as well.
On the offensive side, the Panthers continued to spread the ball around and play an aggressive and smart game. Leading Pioneer was Senior Alexis Robinson who put down and impressive 17 kills for the match. The sophomore duo of Olivia Brooke and Madison Blickenstaff each added 10 kills. Mikenna Landis added 7 kills on the night, Mackenzie Campbell had 4 kills and freshman Hailey Criped finished with 2 kills. The Lady Panthers also had 16 aces and served at a high percentage, only missing 2 serves the entire match.
The Lady Panthers will travel to Worthen Arena at Ball State University to play in the 1A State Championship match. They will take on Barr Reeve, who won the Southern Semi State match, this Saturday, November 3rd in the first match at 11:00am. Tickets will be on sale in the high school book store.
