2020-21 PIONEER ATHLETIC EVENT GUIDELINES BY COLOR

The purpose of education-based athletics at Pioneer Junior-Senior High School is to foster the human growth and development of each student-athlete by promoting self-discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship and advocating moral courage, loyalty, and empathy.  Participating in sports fulfills the social, emotional, and mental health needs of our athletes.

With the number of positive COVID-19 cases escalating in Indiana, the physical health and safety of our student-athletes must also remain paramount.  The shift to indoor sports–basketball, wrestling, and swimming & diving–this winter has heightened apprehensions about virus spread as competitors will be in close contact with one another in enclosed settings.

As a result, the mitigation efforts of the athletic department must intensify as winter sports begin.  Pioneer Junior-Senior High School will enact enhanced safety protocols, including limiting fans at school-sponsored athletic events, while following Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) guidelines.

The Indiana State Department of Health has established a color-coded county map measuring weekly cases per 100,000 residents and seven-day all tests positivity rate.  The ISDH assigns a color based on the average of these two metrics, which is updated weekly on Wednesdays at www.coronavirus.in.gov

The following recommendations provided by the athletic department will determine the approved spectator participation at athletic contests at Pioneer Junior-Senior High School.  These winter guidelines are enacted based on the ISDH color-coding of Cass County with the designated colors of blue, yellow, orange, and red for at least fourteen (14) calendar days.  The ISDH Commissioner, Cass County Health Department, IHSAA, or Pioneer Jr-Sr High School may impose additional stipulations, including the further limitation of spectators at school-sponsored athletic events, if Cass County is assigned any color-coding for at least fourteen (14) calendar days.

Blue – There is minimal community spread, and current athletic activities may continue.

Auxiliary Gym: 25% capacity (450 spectators)

Auxiliary Gym: 20% capacity (356 spectators)

Swimming Pool: 25% capacity (50 spectators); 1 ticket per Pioneer athlete or manager; no visiting fans
