REGIONAL CHAMPS! Pioneer defeats Andrean 24-21 to earn the 2020 IHSAA Football Class 2A Regional Title
ROYAL CENTER — The Pioneer Panthers defeated the Andrean Fighting 59ers 24-21 on Friday, November 13 to secure the 2020 IHSAA Football Class 2A Regional Championship at “The Pit” at Pioneer Jr-Sr High School.
After Pioneer took a 24-8 advantage early in the fourth quarter, the Fighting 59ers scored the next 13 points to trail the Panthers by three points; however, Pioneer thwarted the intense comeback attempt when Addai Lewellen picked off an Andrean pass in the end zone with a little over a minute remaining in the contest. The victory was the program’s eighth football regional championship in school history.
Addai Lewellen led the Panthers by rushing for 140 yards on 25 carries–including a 1-yard touchdown run–and added two 2-point conversion runs; while, Ezra Lewellen ran for 107 yards on 20 attempts and had a 2-point conversion run. Cayden Hill scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Logan Smith on fourth down.
Pioneer (12-1) will travel to Fort Wayne on Friday, November 20 and battle the Bishop Luers Knights for the 2020 IHSAA Football Class 2A Semi-State #9 Championship.
